Event Description

Come and along and try out this exciting combination of West African drumming and dancing!

Email justine@hartbeats.co.uk to book your place. You must let me know in advance because there are a limited number of dunduns.

Dunduns are the bass drums from West Africa that form a traditional djembe and dundun ensemble. I study with Guinean dancer Salimatou Camara and will be teaching her choreography. Each person has a dundun drum which is played vertically with one stick in each hand. First you will play the core dundun part whilst stepping in time - there will be a specific step for each rhythm. There will also be "breaks" where the lead drummer plays a call and the dundun dancers respond with a short phrase / break. There are also parts where you move away from the dunduns to do a few dance moves with the sticks still in your hands.

The session on 14th Oct will concentrate on the breaks and also the stepping whilst drumming on the dundun. I fractured my foot so I can't dance yet. I can walk gently so this is how I will be demonstrating the step bit.

Following the Dundun Dance class on 14th Oct, I will continue the rhythm we are working on over these dates:

21st Oct 4.30 - 5.30 pm Wycombe Arts Centre
4th Nov 4.30 - 5.30 pm Wycombe Arts Centre
11th Nov 4.30 - 5.30 pm Wycombe Arts Centre
18th Nov 2.50 - 3.50 pm Royal Grammar School (RGS)

I also run African dance classes that immediately follow the Dundun Dance sessions each week. These will mainly be attended by people who have come to my classes and learnt some dances already. I won't be dancing because of my foot - not for a while anyway. If you are interested in these or classes where I'll be teaching new dances in 2019, do get in touch justine@hartbeats.co.uk
